Back Pain Q & A

Where can back pain strike?

Your back is an expansive area, leaving ample opportunity for problems to develop that can cause pain. Your spine supports your back and is constituted by 33 vertebrae, which can be divided into four regions:

  • Your mid-back, or thoracic region
  • Your low back, or lumbar region
  • Your sacrum
  • Your coccyx

Most back pain originates in the five vertebrae that make up your low back, which is understandable given all that they are responsible for concerning support and movement. Back pain can originate in any of the other areas of your back, too, but it’s far less common.

What are the typical causes of back pain?

Because of the stress your back suffers on a daily basis, there are numerous injuries, repetitive stresses, and degenerative conditions that can cause pain, including:

  • Herniated or bulging disc
  • Muscle strain
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fracture
  • Compression fractures from osteoporosis
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Spinal irregularities, such as scoliosis

Again, your back is a large area and prone to pain because of the enormous pressure it’s under. The only way to find out what’s at the root of your back pain is to see Dr. Geraci for a diagnosis.

How is back pain diagnosed?

When you see Dr. Geraci, he begins with a complete review of your past health, your lifestyle, and your symptoms. He then performs a functional analysis of your spine, hip, knee, ankle, and foot in the positions you typically use for work, sport, or lifestyle activities. He also performs a functional evaluation of your core and individual strength. Lastly, he uses diagnostic ultrasound to get a glimpse of what’s going on inside your back.

How is back pain treated?

Armed with a diagnosis, Dr. Geraci first relieves you of pain. To do that, he uses:

  • X-ray-guided, or fluoroscopic, injections
  • Manual medicine
  • Regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapy
  • Prescription medications, only when needed

Dr. Geraci is a firm believer in helping his patients not only overcome an immediate problem but helping them find long-term solutions for back pain. After restoring your comfort, he devises a treatment plan that strengthens your back and protects it from painful problems down the road.
